Let's Get Outside!

Blog_Favs_SummerActivities

Big vacations in the summer are always great, however, we also enjoy the simple things in life. Plus, we think that summertime is always well spent in and around our city - the warm weather and pretty YYC days offer up the perfect opportunity to share some laughs and make some memories with family and friends. With that in mind, we have asked a few of your barre tenders what you might find them getting up to during the summer (when they aren’t kicking butt at the barre, of course). With their wisdom, we have made up a list of our absolute favourite activities to do during the summer months! Some things on our list involve venturing out a little bit, while others can literally be done in your own backyard. Here are our BBS favs: summer activities edition!

1.     Swimming in the outdoor pools
2.     Getting out to Vancouver Island and being by the ocean
3.     Gardening!
4.     Waterfall hunting
5.     Canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding on Glenmore reservoir
6.     Boating & wake surfing
7.     Camping (or Glamping) in the mountains
8.     Floating down the Bow or Elbow River
9.     Patios, patios....did we say patios?
10.   Hitting the links - we mean golfing ;)

If you think there's something missing on our list, let us know because we have got to try it! Share your favourite summer activities with us on social. And in the meantime, we'll catch ya at the barre!

Barre Star Hall of Fame: Rockstar Rhonda

Before 23-year-old barre addict, Rhonda Law, was introduced to BBS by her work colleague, most of her evenings involved marathons. Netflix marathons, that is, accompanied by Doritos. After just one class, she was hooked (we have that effect on people) and now her workout regime consists of seven pulsing, burning, butt-sculpting classes a week. Plus, now she really does train for marathons. Like, the running kind! Congratulations on your incredible transformation Rhonda, we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next.

How did you first come across barre?

I was introduced to barre by my friend and co-worker, Brittni Marshall, who was pulsing and plié-ing in the middle of our office shouting, "I did one barre class—now I think I'm a ballerina!" I accompanied her to a Barre Body Fit class in March and, just like she was, I was instantly hooked.

What was it about this for of exercise that made you an instant addict?

I love how upbeat barre is. From the music to the fabulous instructors. The barre tenders are so enthusiastic and motivating. I think it is amazing that their job is to encourage individuals to become healthier, happier and stronger. It’s so uplifting to be in a studio full of positivity. I won’t lie, I also love how quickly the physical results come.

How have you and/or your lifestyle changed since barre became a part of your life?

I work as a mental health outreach nurse. I love my job because it is riveting and rewarding, but it can be very demanding at times. Barre is an hour out of my day where I can sweat and pulse out any stress and focus on simply taking care of myself. It allows me to leave my problems at the barre, and walk away feeling rejuvenated. Barre has taught me the importance of caring for myself. If I don't take care of myself, how do I effectively take care of my clients, friends, and family?

I also believe in practising what I preach. If I am encouraging my clients to eat healthier and exercise more regularly, it is important that I lead by example. And as added bonus, I have lost 25 lbs since I incorporated barre into my daily routine.

What goals have you accomplished since starting with BBS?

I ran my fastest marathon this year at the Calgary Scotiabank Marathon, shaving almost a full hour off my 2013 time. I recommend every runner to cross-train with barre. Since starting barre, my legs feel stronger, hills feel smaller and the miles seem shorter.

What future goals are you now looking to tackle?

I would like to qualify to run the Boston Marathon. Dream big!

Tis the Season (to keep up with your fitness)

The month of December is quite possible “the most wonderful time of the year” in terms of spreading the love, generosity and positive vibrations. In terms of getting one’s workouts in, though. Well, for most people an extremely busy social calendar and the winter blahs make their December fitness track record look a lot less than wonderful.

While it’s easy to understand why you’d be tempted to skip out on your workout in favour of other things, we’ve got a few reasons why you should keep moving and sweating at your regularly scheduled times—even when the eggnog and fireplace are calling your name.

Let There be Light

Ok, we’ll give it to you, when the days get shorter and darker it gets more challenging to get psyched about getting out of bed to fit in some exercise. Even leaving the office just in time to catch the last few moments of daylight can be enough to make you want to drive directly home and hibernate instead of hitting the gym, but this is actually the time of year when you need the positive emotional effects of exercise the most. It may be a drag to get yourself there, but we can pretty much guarantee that you are never going to regret squeezing your workout in. Those endorphins work wonders.

Feeling the burn Helps you feel the calm

Last month’s InStyle magazine shocked us with a statistic indicating that 60 percent of women are willing to skip out on their workouts during the month of December if something comes up. We get it, it’s a busy time. There are cookies to bake, office parties, presents to buy and wrap, school concerts, gatherings by the dozen and, oh yah, quality family time to log, but neglecting your health this time of the year is only going to hinder you further down the line. Schedule your workouts (as in register for all the barre classes you will commit to for the coming week on Sunday), hit them hard for an hour, and you will leave the studio feeling energized and ready to face what ever events you have to take on later in the day.

The Hangover Helper

Let’s be honest about the fact that holiday parties often equate to a less-than-spritely feeling the morning after. It may be awfully tempting to pull the covers over your head and wallow the day away, but (and we may have some first hand knowledge of this) stepping up to the barre can be your saviour. Getting the blood circulating, sweating out the toxins, rehydrating with copious amounts of water and gathering some of those aforementioned endorphins will have you ready to face your holiday to-do list even if you woke up feeling as though you’d been hit by a truck (disguised as vodka).

You ate it, now it’s time to Negate it

Let’s also be honest about the fact that no matter how disciplined you are in the clean eating department a little indulgence is going to happen this month—and it should! We all read the usual blog posts and magazine articles about how we should stick to the vegetables and hummus at the stick with seltzer waters with a twist, but that’s going to result in a pretty boring holiday season. Not that you need our permission, but go ahead and enjoy some of your seasonal favorites. Gingerbread isn’t always available after all. Just be sure to get your regularly scheduled workouts in and you won’t have to deal with any of the guilt or developing a belly complete with a Santa-esque jelly shake come new years. We’ll leave the shaking for our legs during an intense set of plies.

Happy Holidays barre stars!

xxo
